An electric current in the gas excites mercury vapor, which produces short-wave ultraviolet light that then causes a phosphor coating on the inside of the lamp to glow.

The average rated life of a fluorescent light bulb is 9 to 15 times longer that of incandescent light bulbs. Fluorescent light bulbs typically have a rated lifespan of 6,000 to 15,000 hours, where an  incandescent lamp is usually manufactured to have a lifespan of 750 hours or 1,000 hours.

Florescent lights are energy efficient and so far the best light for interior lighting. They are also low production cost (of tubes, not of the ballasts) while giving long life span of tubes. The lights give diffused light which is good for general, even lighting and reduce harsh shadows.
